Hair Loss and Alternative Medicine
Written by Clive Chung on 6:38 AMMore than ever, people are turning to alternative medicine for disease prevention and treatment. A study recently reported that four out of ten Americans used alternative therapies in 1997. And, according to another recent survey, approximately 60 percent of households view alternative medicine as complementary to conventional medicine.
Alternative medicine includes such therapies as acupuncture, chiropractic care, nutrition, herbalism, yoga, massage, hypnotherapy, and relaxation techniques. Increasingly, alternative medicine is being used as supportive treatment for certain kinds of hair loss. Nondrug products, nutrition, supplements, herbs, and natural hair care products are among the alternative medicine options discussed in this blog.
If you are using or considering alternative medicines, discuss your decision with your physician. Tell him or her what you are using, why you are using it, and how it is working. That way, your alternative care can be coordinated with the conventional care you are receiving from your physician.
Many women are afraid to discuss alternative medicine with their physicians for fear they will brush off or pooh-pooh the decision. But this isn't always the case. More physicians today are open to alternative therapies - and are employing them in their own practices. They realize that the benefits of alternative medicine are too overwhelming to ignore. In fact, the National Institutes of Health has already funded more than seventy studies on various types of alternative medicine. And nearly half the medical schools in the United States are offering courses on alternative medicine. More good news: Many health care plans now cover alternative treatments.
If your doctor is opposed to your use of alternative remedies, find out why. It could be that the treatment is medically unsafe and harmful to your health, based on your medical history. Some herbs, for example, interact dangerously with prescription medication, or can aggravate existing health problems.
